A sonnet is a fourteen line poem with particular rhyme
scheme . The poem deals with a single a theme or subject . The word sonnet
derives from the Latin word ‘Sonneto’
which means a short lyric or song . This form has been a popular form of poetry

originated in Greek and Latin literature .

or their variation with alternate rhymes . In a Petrarchan sonnet the elaboration and its subject matters are
presented in the Octave section while its deviation from the main subject is
expressed in last six lines , called sestet

pains of an adoring male lover by sir
Thomas wyatt in the early sixteen th century . The petrarchan form was latter used

technically easier in English by
introducing a new pair of rhymes in the second four lines of the octave .

first quatrain while an elaboration is made in the second quatrain . The third
quatrain puts forward a different argument about the theme stated while the
final couplet summarizes that complete subjects .
