1.What is sonnet explain  ?

                A sonnet is a fourteen line poem with particular rhyme scheme . The poem deals with a single a theme or subject . The word sonnet derives from the Latin word ‘Sonneto’ which means a short lyric or song . This form has been a popular form of poetry throughout the ages  and it was originated in Greek and Latin literature .

 

2. What are the two main type of sonnet  ?

                There are two main type of sonnet in English literature .

A ) Italian sonnet or Petrarchan Sonnet .

B ) English Sonnet or Shakespearean Sonnet .

 

3. Petrarchan Sonnet or Italian Sonnet .

                This form of poetry was originated in fourteen century  by the hands of great Italian poet Petrarch . This sonnet has two parts- Octave  comprising first eight lines and sestet comprising last six line . It has a particular rhyme scheme  -a b b a   a b b a   cd  cd cd  or their variation with alternate rhymes . In a Petrarchan sonnet  the elaboration and its subject matters are presented in the Octave section while its deviation from the main subject is expressed in last six lines  , called sestet .

            Petrachan sonnet were first imitated in England in both their stanza form and their standard subject –the hopes and pains of an adoring male lover  by sir Thomas wyatt in the early sixteen th century . The petrarchan form was latter used , for a great variety of subject , Milton , Wordsworth   and other sonneteers , who sometimes made it technically easier in English  by introducing a new pair of rhymes in the second four lines of the octave .

           

            In case of theme this form of sonnet deals with single emotion , particularly love , and other type of deep feelings .

            As it’s a very short poem the poet uses metaphor , imagery symbol and other forms of figure of speech for creating a special effect .

 

4. Shakespearean   sonnet  or English sonnet .

                This form of sonnet has come to the literature in sixteenth century  by the great English poet Shakespear . This sonnet has four parts –three quatrain of four lines each and a final couplet . In Shakespearean sonnet   the statement of the theme is expressed in first quatrain while an elaboration is made in the second quatrain . The third quatrain puts forward a different argument about the theme stated while the final couplet summarizes that complete subjects .

            In case of theme this form of sonnet deals with single emotion , particularly love , other type of deep feelings .

John donne shifted from the hithero primary subject . sexual love , to a variety of religious theme in his holly sonnet , written early in the seventeenth century , expended the range of the sonnet to other matter of serious concern . except  for a lapse in the English neoclassical period . The sonnet has remained a popular form to the present day  and includes  among its distinguished paractioners ,in the nineteenth century .

            A number of Elizabethan author arranged their poems into sonnet sequence or sonnet cycle in which a number of sonnets are linked together
