ANGLO-SAXON HEROIC POETRY |
What is Anglo-Saxon poetry
The Anglo-Saxon period was a heroic age, as at that time many literature was written about the great heroic death of the war-heroes. On purpose of such writing was certainly propagandistic as the kings used to proudly express the bravery and exploits of their words or dear and near ones. As a result, we do have a fairly good number of heroic literature written during the six hundred years from the middle of the 5th century till the Norman conquest in 1066. Most of the poems written during the period came from oral tradition, and as such they contained hero-worship more than anything else. In the bulk of heroic poetry, we do not get historical accuracy, nor any coherence of thoughts and ideas. Actually, certain aspects of heroic life such as bravery, patriotism, spirit of sacrifice, generosity, loyalty and humanity were highlighted to a great extent. As a result, much of the poetry written during the period was emotional expressions of some heroic qualities. Two dominant moods can easily be found in the heroic poetry of the age - namely the heroic idealism or the somber fatalism. we get to know, how people, even after the death of their king could come close together and avenge of the death of their king. Most of the war-poems of this ancient age were fragmentary but showed signs of greater development of future years. They came from the Scandinavian, the swish, or the Danish settlers, but later on became English in spirit. The nature of heroic poetry reflected the old Germanic association and Pegan belief in nature. But we also find some Christian touches which were introduced latter on by the Christian monks who preserved thoubs works.
'Beowulf' was the greatest of the heroic poems which became the natural epic of the English people. The poem is also the longest one, having almost three thousand lines. The poem clearly shows' its association with the Scandinavian races, and the place of action is also located in the Scandinavian island. It describes the life of an action of great war.
'Beowulf' whose name can be traced back to ancient history. The poem describes Beowulf's face off with Grandly and his mother in the first part and with a fire-dragon in the second part of the poem. The poem highlights all the heroic ideas with emphasis on the model code of conduct of the kings and his subjects. The poet of 'Beowulf' shows a great capacity of drawing characters.
